Audience: Viewers Status: User Guide
When a creator is streaming live, a chat panel runs alongside the video so you can talk with the creator and other viewers in real time. This guide covers how to join in, send messages, reply, and mention people.
Joining the chat
Open the live episode and the chat panel appears next to or below the player. You need to be logged in to send messages. If you are signed out, you can still watch the conversation, and you will be prompted to log in when you try to post.
Messages from everyone in the room appear as they are sent. New messages show up on their own, so you do not need to refresh the page.
Sending a message
Type in the chat box and send. A few things to know:
- A message can be up to 500 characters. Longer messages are not accepted.
- Empty messages are not sent.
- There is a steady rate limit on how fast you can post. If you send several messages in quick succession, you will be asked to slow down for a moment before posting again. This keeps the chat readable for everyone.
Replying and threads
You can reply directly to a specific message instead of posting into the main flow. Choose Reply on the message you want to respond to, then write your reply. Replies are grouped with the message they answer, so a back-and-forth stays together as a thread rather than getting lost in the stream of new messages.
Mentioning someone with @
To get another viewer’s or the creator’s attention, type @ followed by their username. As you type, a list of matching usernames appears so you can pick the right person. People who have recently chatted on the episode are suggested first, which makes it quick to reply to someone who is already active in the room.
When you send a message that mentions someone, that person is notified that you tagged them.
The subscriber badge
If you have an active subscription to the creator’s organization, your messages show a subscriber badge. It is a simple way to show you support the creator. You do not need to turn anything on. The badge appears automatically when you chat as an active subscriber.
Giving coins to the creator
Coin gifts are not sent from the chat box. To give coins, open the support panel on the show. Coin gifts are funded with coins, which you buy ahead of time. For how coins and coin gifts work, see Pricing Your Content.
Moderation
Creators want chat to stay welcoming. The creator and their operators act as moderators, and a moderator can remove a message and record a reason for removing it. Follow the creator’s guidelines for their community, and keep the conversation respectful.
Troubleshooting
You cannot post a message:
- Confirm you are logged in. Posting requires an account.
- If you just sent several messages, wait a moment. The rate limit clears on its own.
- Check that your message is between 1 and 500 characters.
New messages are not appearing:
- Refresh the episode page to reconnect to the chat.
